New Suburbs – The Book

Life in the Modern Village

So, it’s time to let the cat of our the bag. Yep, I am writing a new book about how we can build better, friendlier neighbourhoods.

In case you don’t know me, my name is Rob Attrell, and I live in the Ottawa, Canada suburb of Orleans.

I started writing my blog The New Orleans one year ago today, and on that anniversary, I’m excited to let you all know that I’m writing a book, currently titled New Suburbs: Life in the Modern Village.

Book Cover

I’ve had an image in my mind of what I want the cover to be for some time…this is temporary but conveys the concept fairly well.

Announcement

I’ve been learning a ton about community and cities for the last 3 years, and have decided it’s time to pass along this knowledge to others. I’ll explore why kids barely play outside anymore, why our cities are struggling to pay their bills, and how we can make room for more people and things to do without changing the character of our neighbourhoods.

This will be a guide to ‘renovating’ suburban communities into lively, safe places to live, work, and play. There is work to do, but we have the tools, and anybody can pitch in.

Right now, the outline for the book consists of four sections which overlap and combine in interesting ways to affect every aspect of our lives. These are:

  • Community
  • Housing
  • Transportation
  • Urban Planning

The changes we could make as suburban communities don’t need to be massive to have an outsized impact.

How Can You Help

This book won’t be the best it can be if I do this alone. If you’re willing to help, I want to build this together.

I’m launching a Patreon today, along with this website newburbs.com. Join me, and you can read the book draft in real-time as I write it. I’d also love to hear your ideas or suggestions for making it even better.
